I have wanted to do a mosaic carousel horse, almost as long as I have been doing mosaics. Which at this point is close to twelve years. It has been probably seven years since my friend Jandel and I found this painted pony at an estate sale. I have moved twice since I purchased it. At first it sat in the corner of the living room, then we moved to a much smaller place and it had a spot on my patio. In this current house it has been tucked away in a corner of the basement by the washer and dryer. Today while putting away all the Christmas decorations I decided to drag it out of that corner. It is finally time to do this project - hurrah!!

I have a mosaic bucket list of sorts particularly for big projects. I have more ideas in my head than I have time to do. Often big projects have to wait behind hundreds of little projects because those are the ones that most people can afford. So they wait sometimes for a very long time but they are not forgotten.

Add caption

Since I have not done much in the way of project postings while I was in Massage School. I will take a moment to give you some background into the mosaic technic that I use. I use what is called the direct method. Basically the glass is glued directly to the form or base. I use glass nippers to cut or rather nip the glass, they have red handles and are in a photo with some nipped mirror glass. They are the main tool that I use. As you may have already guessed, I work with stained glass. Rather than cutting larger pieces and grinding them to the desired shape as one would for a stained glass window. I nip larger pieces of glass down into small glass tiles. I can nip circles, rectangles, triangles, petals, leaves and various other shapes. These shapes are then glued into place and later grouted.

This carousel horse is a more advanced project and will be a bit challenging because it is not a flat surface. As you can see the surfaces have a fair amount of texture and differing levels. Which make gluing and grouting much more difficult due to the un even surfaces the tiles sometimes have trouble adhering.

Sorry this photo is going the wrong direction.

Here is a close up of what I accomplished today after cleaning up my work space. I will probably allow it to dry and then do the same portion on the other side of the horse. The reason being so I make sure to use the same glass choices.

I have drawers, jars, and boxes of glass in my basement work space. Some of the glass is in larger sheets and a lot of it is already nipped into smaller shapes. It is easy to loose track of the glass that you used earlier in a project. Since this horse needs to match on both sides I will try to do the same parts on each side before moving on to another area.

Since my primary focus at this time in my life is building my massage practice. (I am located in Spokane Washington if you need a massage therapist. ) This project will take a while for me to complete. I will be posting updates as I go along. On the right side of my blog is a follow by e-mail box - when I update this blog my post will be sent to you.
A newer one called Spark My Creativity and it is the 2nd year for A Devotional Mosaic. Last year, 2012, around 1700 people participated in the challenge. The idea is that for 26 days of the month of April your posts go along with each corresponding letter of the alphabet. It generally works out to be Monday- Saturday with Sunday being a day of rest. It is also a kind of blog hop where you try and visit as many other people involved in the challenge and leave them a comment on their post. I've had to learn things like how to leave my signature so people can find me.

Last year I did not do so well on the visiting part. This year I am trying to get around to meet as many people as possible. The neat thing about it is it helps to build your audience. I pre posted everything for the Spark My Creativity blog, which means I spent a full day creating posts and setting them on timers to post on the correct day. It was a big job, I did it with this blog last year. Here are some of those posts.
With the posts from my devotional blog I created an e-book, heres the link where it is available. https://payhip.com/b/dGY2

This year in my devotional blog I am trying to also do a digital painting using Sketch Book Pro its a lot like Photoshop but the brush set responds and feels more like actual painting. I also use the Bamboo Tablet put out by Wacom. This is a good way for me to push myself to get better at using it.

The digital paintings are my idea of what the varios biblical characters may have looked like. No one was snapping photos back then. Some days I have more time and manage to get a bit more detailed.
Anyway here are the digital paintings that I have done so far. If you click on the photo or the title it should take you to the actual post. If not use the A Devotional Mosaic link above in the post to get there.
There is a reason that I prefer to write in the morning. It is now almost ten at night. I had a quick prayer time this morning, worked on paying bills, had a wonderful lunch with a dear friend, went to the doctor. Then I went to the pharmacy and listened to what turned into four hours of speeches given by another friend for a class. So I now know about cat grooming, the advantages of colemack keyboards, and non lethal self defense weapons. Hard to believe that three six minute speeches could turn into a four hour adventure.

As I sit here trying to sort out my thoughts to find something inspiring to write about my brain feels a bit muddled, might be the cough syrup with codine that I took so I would not cough during the speeches. It has been a very full day for a Monday.

My highlight today was lunch with my friend Karen in her new home. Seeing the projects she is working on, and hearing about the books she has read and listening to new parts of her memoirs. Spending time with her is like partaking in a feast of deep thoughts and inspiration. Her life is rich and purposeful and has a holy quality that never fails to feed my soul and inspire my spirit. I was her guest on Sunday to attend a the local Bach Festival. We listened to two hours of the Goldberg Variations played brilliantly on piano. The music filled the atmosphere of the huge gothic style cathedral, with stone walls, tapestries, mosaics and exquisite stained glass. I read it took ten years to build. It was beautiful and awe inspiring. I've included a small photo collage of some of the photos I took.

I have spent most of my Christian life in church plants that met in gyms or store fronts or small functional church buildings. They might have had a banner or two but nothing of the timeless and lasting beauty of a cathedral. I can't help but appreciate the broad spectrum of church buildings and even our manner of worship can be very different from one place to the next. I am amazed by the creativity of the Almighty God, King of the Universe who sees all of our expressions of worship and finds delight in them. I hope to some day see the cathedrals in Europe or the Catacombs. I am thrilled that Christianity has been going on for 2000 years and it has a rich history. There is even deeper history that goes back even further in the the Old Testament and the history of Gods dealing with Israel. I look at all of these things and I am reminded that I have only scratched the surface of what there is to know of God, of his people who have gone before me. Isaac Newton said " If I have seen farther than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.

Hebrews 12:1

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,"

I look at the photos of the cathedral that I took and I think of the faith of the people who came together to build it. I wonder what legacy or marks my own generation will leave on this world. We have every gadget known to man and we are still are running to catch up.

I read this quote while waiting at the doctors office today. "Our culture invariably supposes that action and accomplishment are better than rest, that doing something - anything - is better than doing nothing. Because of our desire to succeed, to meet these ever-growing expectations we do not rest. Because we do not rest, we lose our way. We miss the compass points that would show us where to go, we bypass the nourishment that would give us succor. We miss the quiet that would give us wisdom. We miss the joy and love born of effortless delight. Poisoned by this hypnotic belief that good things come only through unceasing determination and tireless effort, we can never truly rests. And for the want of rest, our lives are in danger. "Sabbath Rest - Restoring the sacred rhythm of rest by Wayne Muller

There is a balance to be found between rest and action. I am reminded again for the need to feed my soul and spirit in the beauty of nature, of art, music, in solitude, quiet contemplation and rest. I think that I am continually learning to find this balance. People often ask how I find the time and inspiration for the things I write or create. It is the overflow of a daily quiet time. It is found in taking time to rest and to allow the Lord to fill me again and again.

Even so I have only scratched the surface. I have so much to learn of solitude, silence and rest. So much to learn in the treasury of His Word and in the stories of those who have gone before me. I find wonder in His story written through the ages. Today was full but it was a good full not a stressed busyness. I could see the Lord ordering it for me. I am tired at this point but thankful for the gift of this day.

I suppose I hope as you are reading these posts that God is stirring up a greater hunger for his word. A greater hunger to see his hand through the ages. A greater desire to spend daily quiet times with Him. That you are stepping out to express His praise and honor in your life in creative ways.

Well I am calling it a night, this may be the latest I have posted - I will be back writing again in a few short hours.

Prayer:
Lord, come and refresh and renew us. Help us to find the balance between rest and activity. Help us to be led by your Sprit. Thank you that you promise to lead us beside still waters and to restore our souls.

Generally I do these time lines just in my head. I have a pretty good idea of how I will need to space out time to work on a project to get it done by a dead line. I however am facilitating a bunch of other artist and helpers for this prayer loft project. I also agreed to be in charge of making the Good Friday Service happen. Both of these projects have dead lines that kind of over lap. Both involve a number of other people. So to play well with others - one must communicate their ideas and expectations clearly.

My Painting so far and the mock up

Anyway part of the purpose of this blog is to help others to understand my methods and how I think about projects. I know that Monday, Friday and Saturday's are the days that I have big blocks of time that I can work on things. So my time line is more about things that I have other people helping with. My own time line for my painting part of the project is pretty much in my head.

My painting idea is that Jesus helps us to take off the mask that covers and hides our brokenness and shame.

So here's my time line so far - I have it on a sticky on my computer. When dates are past I move them up to the done section. I can easily move things to other dates if needed. I will add other things to my sticky time line list as I think of them. I do my mock ups using bits and pieces of 6-10 photographs that I meld together into my idea using photo shop. My final project will be similar to the mock up but not necessarily a photo realism likeness.

It measures 9.5 by 12.5 and has been done on wood using acrylic paints. I will be listing it for sale on at my artfire site in the mean time I have created a variety of fun items using this image that you will find below.
They have been done using an epoxy glaze. They can be hand washed and dried and would be a beautiful addition to your home or to give as gifts.

I found this pitcher and these two matching glasses and decided they would make a lovely mosaic project.

It is a little be more tricky when you are working on surfaces that are not flat. There is a time lag between placing the piece and the glue drying. You can see how I have the pitcher balanced to place the top row of flat marbles. On the bottom I was able to turn it upside down and use tape to secure the flat marbles while they dried.

This is a project that I plan to offer for sale
for $150.00 plus shipping by USPS
Medium Flat Rate Box plus tracking is $12.00
International shipping is quite a bit more, let me know if you need me to get a price on that.

Because it is a handmade mosaic piece it is best to hand wash by wiping it with a damp soapy rag.
The glaze that I use is pretty durable stuff even so I would use care in washing the various elements and avoid submerging the project or getting a lot of water on the mosaic portions.Margothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07655602086395374599noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947342672555165770.post-63519231987925920612012-08-10T10:36:00.001-07:002012-08-10T10:36:44.129-07:00Wire and Bead Hangers

I had originally thought I would use ribbon or gold chord to hang these ornaments. I had an idea that I wanted to play with using wire and beads to create the hangers.

I don't have a much of a bead collection. I had done some wire and glass ornaments a while ago and these are left from that project. You can see those ornaments in my artfire shop.
I could probably repeat these same bead combos on the rest of the series of Cinnamon Bear Ornaments but I will also be on the look out for beads when I am out and about.

I did not have any gold 20 gauge wire so I used the silver that I had on hand.
In my in between big projects with all the discombobulated feelings
that go along with not knowing what is next. Its an uncertain place and
usually its just one thing that ends and most of the rest of my life is
the same. Currently I've had a number of things come to their completion
- which is good. The hard part that taken all together at the same time
it has magnified those discombobulated feelings.
In the mean time I have done some cleaning and organizing. My work area is much more functional.

I
love that I can see all my paint colors and won't have to rummage
through a basket or drawer to find them. Plus I can tell if I have
colors that I am missing and want to try and get at some point.

I
still need to finish the key painting. I don't like the green grass.
Plus right lower part of the key that you are looking through is too
dark. Its getting close - I am probably stalling on finishing it because
it would add another thing to the list of things that have come to a
completion. I guess it gives me something that I know I need to do for
the moment.

Communion Set in process.

I've got three of these communion sets that I have
just started working on. These are small projects and the weirdness is
not there upon finishing them like it is on bigger projects that are
part of my life for a longer time period. These will not be grouted but
most likely glazed with a super hard epoxy glaze like they use on
counter tops. I think I need to use that rather than the regular
dimensional glaze the I use on smaller jewelry projects. I want these to
be able to be hand washed and I think the epoxy process will be better
for that purpose.
I have three of these communion sets that I plan on doing between now and Christmas.

All
in all in this odd in between place I'm ok because I know what it is - I
have experienced it in the past. Its a good time to rest, pray, read
books, clean and wait for the next batch of inspiration and direction.
In my last post I was pondering ways to avoid those feelings. I am
thinking however that they might be necessary and part of the process
that I just need to accept.
I realize that I am more stable when I am engaged in a big project. It helps define what I am doing. So I find myself very uncomfortable in the time in between ending one project and beginning another.

I wonder if there is a way that I can solve that by overlapping projects. That way before one is done I have started on another and there by getting rid of that in between that is so uncomfortable and often troubling to me. I struggle to know what to do with myself.

It might be part of old performance orientation baggage that I feel good when I am working on something.
I will have to ponder that a bit more and make sure there are not some old roots to still dig up.

I know that as scattered as my approach to life may seem. That I have a lot of buit in stability points and structures. I have a lot of freedom with in those structures. One of those support structures is my projects. I do have several smaller projects that I have in the works. Its been hot in my office area and I need to switch out the air conditioner for one that actually works. So I have spent too much time flipping through Penterest in the cool of the living room, rather than working on projects in my office. I will remedy that this weekend.

Anyway I have a mosaic idea for making some communion cups and trays that I will try to get the supplies for today.

I have a painting idea using the adorable miss Autumn, the daughter of a friend of mine.
We were able to finally convince here to let me take some photos of her in the garden.

Plus I have a commission project doing about 25 painted ornaments to go along with the Cinnamon Bear radio stories.

Not to mention I have a ton of things that I need to get posted to my Artfire shop. That means photos and filling out the requested info.

All in all for any of that to happe I need to get back in my office. So I will have to solve my office temperature issues and probably do a bit of organizing to make it workable for this round of projects.

I will keep you posted as I go along. Sorry for the gap in posting - I've been a bit discombobulated.
Well if you have been following along my River Walk painting has made it to its final destination. They decided it was too pretty to hang out doors and so it has found its place in this lovely entry way area. I love the yellow vase.

Thank you to Eleanore for sharing her photos of the unveiling and the painting and how they have displayed it. Just beautiful.

Anyway thanks for following along on this project. I'm currently working on a project called the Key and have posted several updates. You can check back through the more resent posts to see those up dates or wait for the next ones I post.
I got some photos back today from Eleanore.
They had a unveiling on Father's day and experienced the painting together as a family for the first time.

They have decided it is too pretty to hang out doors and it will replace the picture in the lover photo. Look at that awesome vase she already has. Wow will that ever make the colors pop.

Then you see her older son and his wife who were depicted as the couple dancing under the bridge. Look, they have danced right out of the painting. Ahh were it so easy to pop out of a painting - the guitar girl would pop out of the painting for a visit with some very dear friends. Its wonderful to be back in touch with them. I am so trilled to have my very first painting after many many years to be hanging in their beautiful home.

They will have another unveiling when their other son visits in the fall. It has been a delightful project to work on and I am glad to know that they are all enjoying it.Margothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07655602086395374599noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7947342672555165770.post-19263874650451894672012-06-16T22:45:00.001-07:002012-06-16T22:45:20.114-07:00Both Sides Now
Today I realized that I was not happy with the sky on the Key painting. You could tell I had painted it after the lighthouse.
So I decided to try masking things out with blue painters tape. I think the sky in the second picture is much improved. I tried to do fluffy clouds but did not like them and decided to go with the streaky sky look.

So the song that came to mind today was Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell

"I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all"

I have to agree with here sentiment - I really don't know clouds at all. I will have to find a cloud tutorial or something cause I could not seem to paint them into.....

"Bows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere" Maybe I can find some help on youtube. For now I'm happy with the sky for this painting. I also worked on the top edge of the surrounding key. It now has more substance and dimension.

I got a message today that the River Walk painting has arrived in San
Antonio, Texas. Perfect timing since the much of the family is
gathering for Father's Day. Eleanore said she would send me some photos
of the unveiling event.

I'm starting a new painting. I'm calling it The Key. Its kind of a view through the hole of a key, probably into the heart. It looks into the faded memories and dreams of the past. If you look at the small key in the picture you can see that it is the same as the bordering edges of the painting.

In the the photo shop image mash up, you see faded photos and old journals and a trunk or old diary and a lighthouse, always a symbol of hope and light. There is a chair because it is a place at rest not anxiety. Places that are healed but not forgotten.

I think it will be a series of three paintings but I don't know what the other two will be yet. They are not likely to emerge until this one is completed. I'm not sure why these images demand to be painted but I suppose I will simply let them speak in their own way. I never know who my art will touch. Some things can be expressed better without words. I'm sure it is in many ways me working to reconcile the past that I have suppressed for far too long. Oh well, it should make an intriguing painting.

My board is not quite square so I think there will be some sort of verse at the bottom. Perhaps this one from Isaiah 33:6
"He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of
salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure."

In my brain there are the overlapping melodies of the old Jim Croce songs Time in A Bottle and Photographs and Memories. Sappy - but there is something in the mash up of the music in my head that is as important as the mash up of the images. They some how fit together. I would not bother to try and make it all fit in a neat box tied with a bow of complete understanding. I certainly have not managed to do that at this point. Call it an idea for a painting and I suppose each viewer will make of it what they will. I'm ok with that.
